tiki time machine 14:
tiki tropics
Tropic like it’s hot…
Our 14th Tiki Time Machine menu, “Tiki Tropics,” celebrates Tiki’s early origins and mid-century explosion in Los Angeles. There, inspired by Don the Beachcomber’s early synthesis of Caribbean cocktails, Cantonese cuisine, and South Seas decor at his influential Hollywood haunt, bars like Sugie’s Tropics (1935) and its successor, the Luau (1953), in Beverly Hills, took tropical and tiki design to even more ambitious and immersive heights.
Our new Tiki Tropics drink menu toasts to this golden era with a selection of 12 revived and revitalized classics from storied mid-century tiki bars and Polynesian restaurants, including the Luau and the Kon-Tiki chain that sprung and spread nationwide from it. Designed and fully illustrated by Australian artist Sue Cadzow, the menu pays homage in its form to a legendarily elaborate folding menu from the Tropics, complete with “see no evil” characters and proprietor Harry “Sugie” Sugarman’s snappy copy.
Following a pause for our holiday menu, the Tiki Tropics menu is back on offer, in addition to our everyday food and drinks menu, every Tuesday through February 25. As always, complete the full menu (not in one night!), and you’ll earn yourself a special completion reward in the form of a custom Hurricane glass, with artwork by Sue.
